Spasticity
Neurological physiotherapy can be used to help reduce spasticity in individuals with neurological conditions. Reducing spasticity can decrease associated pain and allow functional movements to become easier.
There are a variety of neurological physiotherapy techniques that can be used to reduce spasticity. They range from hands-on manual techniques carried out by your physiotherapist, to techniques you can do yourself at home. Physiotherapists can work closely with occupational therapists in addressing spasticity allowing the best possible management and, therefore, outcome.
An initial assessment will be carried out to enable your physiotherapist to devise the best treatment programme focused on your problems, needs, and personal goals. Physiotherapy treatment may include:
- Slow passive stretching of the affected limbs with prolonged holds
- Passive range of movement exercises
- Splinting / casting - completed alongside the occupational therapists
- Tilt-tabling
- Hydrotherapy
- Promotion of functional movement patterns
- Identification and removal of obnoxious stimuli E.g. cold drafts, loud noises
- Self management techniques such as ice
- Explanation of the importance of correct positioning, and the role of speed in spasticity
- Advice on Botox and other medications E.g. Baclofen
Your neurological physiotherapist will work alongside you and your family members in creating a personalised programme aimed at achieving your agreed goals. Long term and short term realistic goals will be created along with expected time frames, and progress will be monitored throughout.
